Mothers don’t get enough credit. We make fun of them in comic routines and on television. We squirm out of their reach when we’re teenagers. We even write books about monster mothers — “How many times do I have to tell you — no wire hangers!”

But moms don’t get nearly enough attention. We don’t call them enough, we don’t kiss them enough, we don’t do nearly enough for them in our whole lifetimes.

This Mother’s Day, spend the entire day with her. Do something she will enjoy, not something you would. Look at all the photo albums, take her out to dinner, send her flowers and write her a long letter telling her exactly how you feel.

Siblings should gather and talk seriously about the many wonderful things she did for them while they were growing up. It’s time to admit that you were the culprit who broke the lamp. The question has been driving her crazy for years.

All too soon in this life, we grow old and don’t have our parents with us. It’s then that we wish that we had taken the time to do the corny, sappy sort of things that our mothers love us for doing.

Don’t put it off. Next Mother’s Day just could be way too late.
