The deadline is approaching for candidates to declare for this year’s Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District Board of Directors election.

There are three seats open this year — Position No. 5 for Valencia County; Position No. 1 for an at-large director; and Position No. 2 for Bernalillo County.

Candidates for county positions must gather signatures from at least 75 qualified electors in that county, and at-large candidates must have a petition with at least 125 qualified electors.

Petitions and other paperwork to declare candidacy must be filed by Friday, Aug. 4. Write-in candidates must declare by Wednesday, Aug. 9.

Interested candidates can pick up declaration and petition forms at the MRGCD office in Albuquerque, 1931 Second St. SW. Forms must be picked up in person, and will not be available on the district’s website, sent by mail or email.

The Valencia County seat is currently held by Stephanie Russo Baca, who serves at the board chairwoman. The at-large position is held by Barbara Baca, of Albuquerque.

Qualified electors in Valencia County will be able to vote for candidates running for both these seats.

The Bernalillo County seat is held by John P. Kelly, but qualified electors in Valencia County can’t vote in that race.

Candidates must be qualified electors of the district, meaning someone who owns real property within the benefited area of the district and has provided proof of ownership interest by July 5.

Election day is Tuesday, Oct. 3. Absentee voting begins on Thursday, Aug. 24, and runs through Saturday, Sept. 30. Early voting will be held Monday, Sept. 18, through Saturday, Sept. 30.
