Annual food drive and basket applications

The Retired Senior Volunteer Program is taking donations of non-perishable food for its annual distributions of food baskets for needy family for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Take donations to the office at 719 S. Main St., Belen. For information, call Bertha Flores at 505-966-2567, or Cindy Lu Hurbina at 505-966-2566.

Through Nov. 19, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program will be taking applications to help those in need with a Thanksgiving food basket. This is limited to the number of baskets available. Those who qualify must live in the Belen school district.

When applying, you must show proof of income, residence, ID and birth certificate or Medicaid card for each child in the household. Applications are available at the RSVP office, 719 S. Main St., Belen. For information, call Bertha Flores at 505-966-2567, or Cindy Lu Hurbina at 505-966-2566.

 

Dedication of Los Lunas bridge

The dedication of the Daniel D. Fernandez Veterans Memorial Bridge will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 5, at Riverside Park, on the east side of the bridge, in Los Lunas. Spc. Daniel D. Fernandez was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the U.S. military’s highest decoration, for throwing himself on a live grenade, sacrificing his life to save the lives of soldiers around him in February 1966 in Vietnam.

 

Craft Fair

The Jessamine No. 45 OES annual Craft Fair and Chile Luncheon will be held on Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Masonic Hall, 607 Goebel Ave., Belen. The sale of crafts will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. COVID-19 guidelines will be in effect.

 

Veterans Day

The annual Veterans Day ceremony will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 11, at Daniel Fernandez Memorial Park in Los Lunas. There will be fellowship and food. The event is hosted by the village of Los Lunas, Los Lunas Invested in Veterans Events, RAKS Building Supply and the Blue Star Mothers of Valencia County.

Refreshments will be served from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 11, at the Belen Veterans Memorial at Eagle Park in Belen.

The Los Lunas High School Mighty Tiger Battalion will hold its 2021 Veterans Day ceremony from 9-11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 9, at the Los Lunas High School football field. It is a Polyglot ceremony, showcasing cadets speaking English, Spanish, American Sign Language, Navajo and Tewa. The celebration is open to the public, and all veterans and family members are encouraged to attend.

 

Chalk on the Sidewalk

The First United Methodist Church of Belen/Rio Communities will hold its first Chalk on the Sidewalk art project on Saturday, Nov. 13, during its Holiday Arts and Crafts Festival. There is an opportunity for a limited number of artists to create a “painting” in chalk pastels under the portico. For questions, email Henry Rau at [email protected].

 

Archery workshop

The Meadow Lake Parks Area Association will hold a free “Introduction to Archery” workshop from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Nov. 13, at the MLPAA property at the end of Meadow Lake Road. This is a basic archery workshop geared for all levels. Materials and supervision are provided. All are invited to attend. Follow orange cones into Hidden Hollow. Sobriety checkpoints

New Mexico State Police will be conducting sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols; and registration, insurance and driver’s license checkpoints in all New Mexico counties during the month of November.
