The white coating (sometimes called caliche) consists of calcium carbonate. This mineral can be identified by dropping some vinegar or other acid on the coating, and the reaction of the acid will produce “fizzing” as tiny bubbles. This carbonate coating forms much faster than the desert varnish coating, and through a very different process that is interesting to investigate.
