LOS LUNAS—Associates from Walmart in Los Lunas recently gathered to spend time with seniors at Fred Luna Multi-Generational Center, assisting in calling numbers, collecting game money and serving snacks and beverages in a game of bingo.

Center employees put on events Monday through Friday for its members, also including line dancing, tai chi, ceramics, sewing, billiards and more. They serve lunch at noon on weekdays for a $1.50 donation for those over the age of 60, and for $5.35 for those under 60.

The game was part of the local Walmart’s ongoing initiative to give back to the communities they serve.

“Our team had a great time at the event. It made everyone’s day to be able to put a smile on the faces of those at the center,” said Walmart manager Isac Esquivel. “We chose to go there because we want community members to know that we are here to give a helping hand. My goal is to have volunteer events for my associates to participate in once a month.”

The Los Lunas Supercenter has also recently volunteered with serving food at the Special Olympics, has aided the local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) chapter, giving them space near the entrance of the store to collect donations, and supported teacher appreciation at Los Lunas High School, collecting donations alongside the Rotary Club of Los Lunas.

“Our store managers care about the communities they work and live in, and running the stores also gives them an outlet to give back to communities in places that they find the most need,” said Walmart Market manager Stephen Bowling.

In addition to volunteer efforts, the Los Lunas Walmart has recently given grants to Valencia Shelter Services for Victims of Domestic Violence, to Teaching Ninjas Inc., a nonprofit aimed at children’s education, and to Casa de Mariposa, which provides a safe home and other services to women with unexpected pregnancies.

If any local nonprofits are interested in having Walmart’s support in volunteer efforts, they are encouraged to reach out to Isac at [email protected].
