The public is invited to join Daniel D. Fernandez, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9676 members at its 2024 celebration of National Medal of Honor Day and National Vietnam War Veterans Day from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, March 23.  

VFW Post 9676 will celebrate these two significant historical days at their post home, located at the entrance to Daniel D. Fernandez Memorial Park, located at 1201 N.M. 314 in Los Lunas. 

This is an opportunity to learn more about Daniel D. Fernandez, visiting with Vietnam War veterans, and learning about VFW Post 9676 activities or joining the post.  

Presenters will be Cynthia Shetter, Richard Melzer Ph.D and John Taylor, historians and authors of the award-winning books “A Legacy of Heroism – New Mexico’s Medal of Honor Recipients” and “Daniel D. Fernandez – The Man Behind the Medal of Honor.”  

Also speaking about his experiences as a Vietnam combat medic and his book, “God, Me and the Blackhorse,” will be author and lifetime member of Post 9676, Barry Beaven. The master of ceremonies will be Post Commander Chet Pino. Jr. Vice Commander Tony Griego will lead the Pledge of Allegiance, while Post Chaplin Andrew Garcia will lead the opening prayer. Post Quartermaster Jack Lovato will recite the National Vietnam War Veterans Day history, and Post Adjutant Frank Gurule will share his personal experiences with Daniel Fernandez.  

The event is free of charge and no registration is required. There will be door prizes and the post will be offering all attendees refreshments. 

All veterans and the general public are invited to celebrate these two important days for veterans.
