It was a “Strange and Beautiful” night of music magic with guitar guru Joe Satriani along with Dream Theater and Kings X, on Wednesday night at the Journal Pavilion.
Beneath the star-filled sky, thousands of fans rocked out to the wild rhythm of Dream Theater whose powerful guitar riffs and thundering drums filled the amphitheater.

A hard rock band by nature, Dream Theater found a way to work the instrumental side of the music without taking away from their powerful lyrics.
Dream Theater brought New Mexico its first live taste of their diverse musical stylings. The band’s longevity has shown it how to work a crowd by going from hard and heavy to slow and meaningful. The musicians dipped into their endless array of albums, including their newest disc “Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence” to give their loyal fans what they came for.
From long-haired older fans in heavy metal T-shirts to Dream Theater’s newly-found younger fans, everyone enjoyed the rock show.
Dream Theater gave way to Joe Satriani, from rockin’ drums to unimaginable guitar riffs. Satriani has been in the business for more than 14 years and has released almost an album a year from the start, including his latest release, “Strange Beautiful Music,” Satriani has been known through out the years as one of the most innovative guitar players of all time.
He did not disappoint on Wednesday. As Satriani makes his guitar spit out riff after riff, his fingers move up and down the strings as if they’re from another planet, possibly the reason he named his second album “Surfing with the Alien.”
Never before have we seen someone so in touch with his music and with the capabilities of an instrument so many people take for granted.
He took control of the stage, commanding the attention of the audience, who were on the feet from the first chord.
From start to finish, the show was proof that rock stars never die and never get old — music lasts forever.
