This summer, as usual, the public libraries in the county’s three municipalities will be holding their summer reading programs for children. Anyone who’s ever had any contact with the programs knows how elaborate they are and what a good — free — option they are for something to do during the summer.
We don’t often enough salute our local libraries for the excellent service they provide in their own quiet ways. Librarians, as a whole, are more adept at giving answers to research questions and finding books for people than they are at blowing their own horns.
The summer reading programs are a good example of how much they offer for such little cost. They display imagination, intelligence and diligence in all that they do. We think that the city and villages have spent wisely and should be commended for providing this service.
When your teenager tells you he or she is bored and has nothing to do this summer, send them down to the library. No matter what their interest, they’ll find something about it — even if what they’re most interested in is rock ‘n’ roll.
In the end, we’d like to personally commend Carmen Jaramillo in Los Lunas, Sophita Kyhnsen in Bosque Farms and Beverly McFarland in Belen and their staffs for all the things they do and all the trouble they go to for those of us seeking information, entertainment and enlightenment. Good job!
