Belen’s No. 1 boys doubles team of Luke Austin and Allen Hernandez recently took St. Pius into a tiebreaker before losing 6-2, 4-6, 7-6.

With the state tennis championships one month away, the Belen Eagles will be able to size up their progress Friday and Saturday in the Albuquerque Academy Invitational. 

Belen will then visit Valencia Tuesday for a district match against the Jaguars.  

The BHS girls (8-5, 2-1) lost a district meeting last week against St. Pius 5-4, but edged Miyamura by that same score and swept Gallup. The Eagles have won 55 percent of their individual matches this season. 

The Belen boys (7-6, 1-2) also had a busy week, losing to St. Pius 7-3 and Miyamura 8-1, but shutting out Gallup.  

Valencia will end the week on the road with a match Thursday against Sandia Prep, and Saturday versus both Miyamura and Gallup. The VHS boys, with an overall player winning percentage of 55 percent, dominated Grants last week but lost to St. Pius 7-2. 

Los Lunas was scheduled to play Tuesday at Santa Fe Capital and Thursday at Rio Grande. In boys action last week, the Tigers defeated Manzano 6-0, but fell to Santa Fe 9-0. The LLHS girls handled Manzano 6-3 but were swept by Santa Fe.
