Eighth-grader Addison Carter scored three goals, including a game-winning penalty kick in overtime, to lead Belen over Hatch Valley 3-2 in girls’ soccer Tuesday.

It was the season opener for the Eagles, who lost in overtime to Hatch Valley last season.

“I was thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, I better not miss this,’” Carter said about the penalty kick shortly after she was swarmed by her teammates. “I was scared. I wanted somebody else to take it until they (teammates) were all cheering me on and saying my name.”

Carter calmly knocked the ball into the lower left corner of the net to seal the victory. Carter’s second goal put BHS ahead with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, but the Bears quickly answered to send the game into overtime.

The BHS boys team lost to Hatch Valley, 7-0, later Tuesday. Both the BHS boys and girls play Thursday at Moriarty.

In other girls’ action this week, Valencia (0-2) lost at Roswell Goddard 6-0.

In boys soccer, Los Lunas (0-3) lost at Organ Mountain 10-0. The Tigers play in a Los Alamos tournament this weekend. Valencia (1-1) fell in overtime at Las Cruces High 2-1. On Saturday, the Jaguars host Miyamura.
