Martha Sisneros was hired as the new varsity volleyball coach at Valencia High School.

“We’re going to shoot for the stars,” said new Valencia head volleyball coach Martha Sisneros. “Our goal is to win our district and to win state. That’s exactly what I told Wilson, ‘Why not Valencia?  Why not?’”

That’s the conviction Sisneros shared with Wilson Holland, Los Lunas Schools director of athletics, during the interview process.

Sisneros knows the program and some of the players well, having coached in the Valencia system for about 10 years, from middle school up to high school.

After taking a year off, Sisneros led the Los Lunas Middle School program this past season.

She applied for the Jaguars’ position, which was left vacant when Melissa Marberry-Profitt resigned in September.

“My heart is there. I feel like Valencia has so much potential and I want them to be successful,” the new coach said.

The potential Sisneros mentions comes from a roster that returns many players from a team that went 14-11 and qualified for the New Mexico 4A State Tournament under interim coach Leslie Owens.

“I know that they have young, talented athletes. I’m just excited to be a part of it,” Sisneros said, adding, “I want to build a strong team culture … discipline, a strong work ethic and some tough love.”

Sisneros is a teacher at Ann Parish Elementary School in Meadow Lake.
