The Belen High School golf team received a donation of $1,179 via the booster club from Sam Espinosa.

“I’d like to thank Sam for his generosity,” said head coach Donald Marquez. “The kids really appreciate it, the coaches appreciate it.”

“The team is awesome; they deserve this,” said Espinosa. “Coach Marquez runs a great program here too and I’m happy to support them.”

The Belen golf team is gearing up for both district and state tournaments and look to continue their hot season.

“I think we’ve got some of the best players in the state,” Marquez said. “Our team is young, but they are experienced and very coachable.”

Sophomore Grady Cox will be looking to defend his state championship from last season, while freshman Rylee Salome will be looking to improve on her third-place finish at the state championships last year.

At the 4A State Preview this past weekend, Salome led the girls on the individual side, shooting a 78. The girls team finished in second-place, 14 shots behind Goddard.

Cox shot a 68 during the State Preview, which was tops in the boys individual. The Belen boys as a team finished third, 14 shots behind Kirtland Central.

The 2022 New Mexico high school 4A golf championships will be held at Santa Ana Golf Club on May 9-10.
