The Valencia County Fire Marshal’s office wants to remind residents of the open-burning restriction for the unincorporated areas of Valencia County.

“Due to the lack of precipitation, high winds, low humidity and record high temperatures, fuels throughout Valencia County continue to dry out, increasing the (chance) … of fires to a dangerous level,” said Valencia County Fire Marshal John Cherry. “There is a great potential for large catastrophic fires to occur.

Because the drought conditions continue to prevail, open burning is also prohibited in Los Lunas, Belen and Bosque Farms.

Los Lunas Fire Chief Lito Chavez said people who open burn will be cited because of the danger factor. Residents in Los Lunas who want to have debris removed can place it together and call the village offices at 865-1377 for information.

The restrictions will remain in effect until rescinded.
