The first week of the high school basketball season went well for local teams, highlighted by the Belen girls (3-0) defeating Santa Teresa in the championship game of the Red vs. Green Tournament in Hatch.

Danilynn Bob was named Most Valuable Player, with Leigha Wright and Jaelynn Bob on the All-Tournament Team. The Eagles’ host the Hub City Tournament starting Thursday.

The BHS boys (1-1) downed Moriarty to start the season, but lost Tuesday, 61-49, to Manzano. Belen plays Albuquerque Academy Thursday to open the Sandia Prep tournament.

At the Capital City Invitational, Valencia boys (4-1) defeated Los Alamos, 40-38, for third place on a Damian Estrada basket in the final seconds. Tuesday, the Jaguars nipped Del Norte, 68-66, in overtime.

New VHS girls’ coach Raymond Montoya notched his initial victory for the Jaguars (1-2) with a win over Santa Fe. VHS is at Clovis Thursday.

Los Lunas girls’ are 1-2 under first year coach Manny Vigil after Tuesday’s 40-33 setback at Mayfield. On Thursday, LLHS hosts Eldorado.

Los Lunas boys lost to Cleveland Tuesday, 67-61, despite 36 points from Jalin Holland. Cleveland’s Daniel Severson topped that with 41 points. LLHS (1-1) plays in the Artesia tournament, starting Thursday.
