Katie Bell Mauldin

1930-2023

Katie Bell Mauldin

Katie Bell Mauldin, of Los Chavez, passed away on Aug. 13, 2023. She was born the second of 10 children to Eugene and Mabel Webb in Weatherford, Okla., on Dec. 28, 1930.

She raised her siblings while her mom worked in the fields during the Depression. Her father had left. Katie laughed about the wooden school buses, commodity food and tumbleweed Christmas trees.

On her 16th birthday, she married. Hail destroyed the couple’s farm, so they moved to New Mexico. She became a Christ-follower, and Jesus gave her the ability to get up laughing whenever she was knocked down.

After Katie divorced at 41, she raised the two children still at home, and then became a traveling grandma, going to whichever child needed her. She spoiled each grandchild, though threatening to “slap (you) under the couch” if one needed correction.

Her favorite of several jobs was at the library in Rudyard, Mich., where she was affectionately dubbed “Grandma Katie.” She became the reigning arm-wrestling champ with her grandsons, and snowball victor into her 90s. She hauled kids on ice cream, pizza and vacation dates. Each knew that Katie loved all her grandchildren; each knew that they were loved most!

Her passions were quilting, sewing and thrift-store shopping (junking).

Katie settled in Los Chavez and worked in the Bosque Farms Church of Christ food ministries. She loved being a servant as long as she could. Laughter was an earmark even through her long bout with Alzheimer’s.

Katie was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Floyd, Jerry, Elmer, Richard and Johnnie; by sisters, Patty McDaniels and June Griffin; and by great-great-granddaughter, Adriene Sanders.

Katie is survived by brothers, Doyle (Linda) Webb and Freddie Babcock (Peggy). Surviving children are Ricky (Nina), Rudy (Linda), Cindy Meyer (Tra) and Fable Hoesch (Hank). There are nine grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.

Services for Katie will be held on Friday, Aug. 25, at the Bosque Farms Church of Christ. A viewing will be held at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. Katie will then be laid to rest at Terrace Grove Cemetery in Belen immediately following the service.

Katie won’t be there! She’s partying.

Pallbearers will be Michael Mauldin, Landon Cheney, Nando Mauldin, Jesse Fanta, Chad Ritterbach and Cooper Mauldin.

Arrangements are being handled by the caring professionals at the Noblin Funeral Service Belen Chapel, 418 W. Reinken Ave., 505-864-4448, where an online guest register is available at noblin.com.
