Calling all sixth through 12-graders! The Leopold Writing Program is seeking submissions of original essays for its 2024 writing contest.
Conservationist Aldo Leopold is most widely known as the author of “A Sand County Almanac,” which focuses on ethics in land use.
In his essay “Engineering and Conservation,” Leopold writes, “Our tools are better than we are, and grow better faster than we do. They suffice to crack the atom, to command the tides. But they do not suffice for the oldest task in human history, to live on a piece of land without spoiling it.”
With that quote in mind, the contest organizers ask New Mexican students to respond to following prompt for their essay: Are our tools better than we are? Think about tools in your life. Do they help or hurt your relationship with our ecological community?
Cash prizes will be awarded to the winning essayists in three grade categories: sixth through seventh, eighth through ninth and 10th through 12th.
