On a night when Los Lunas standouts Mia Mendoza and Riley Luther were recognized for reaching statistical milestones, the Tigers’ Tuesday defeated Rio Grande 3-0 to clinch the District 5-5A championships.

LLHS (18-3, 9-0) will look to complete an unbeaten district season Thursday when the Tigers host Albuquerque High. Mendoza, a junior, recently recorded assist 2000, while Luther, a senior, now has registered more than 750 kills.

Also Tuesday, Belen (10-11, 4-3) handled Grants 3-0, while Valencia (13-9, 5-2) downed Highland 3-1. Belen hosts Valencia Thursday to end the regular season.

State tournament brackets will be announced Sunday. Currently, Los Lunas is ranked fourth in 5A, while in 4A, VHS has a ranking of No. 11 and BHS No. 19.
