The Metro High School Boys and Girls Golfers of the Year both hail from Belen.
Grady Cox and Rylee Salome were recently honored by the Albuquerque Journal. Salome won her second straight 4A state championship and captured 10 tournament titles in all during her sophomore season.
Cox, a two-time 4A state champion, finished second at state while winning seven tournaments during his junior season. The average round for both Cox and Salome was 69.
Mike Powers spent more than 40 years as a television news and sports anchor, mostly in the Albuquerque market. He has won numerous awards including New Mexico Sportscaster of the Year. He covers a wide range of sports, including the Valencia County prep scene.
