First year coach Oscar Medrano and the Eagles are 4-2 after a heartbreaking 8-7 loss Tuesday at Valley, where the Vikings scored four times in the last inning.  BHS has victories against Pojoaque Valley, Santa Fe, Los Alamos and a split against Organ Mountain.

“They are a really good 5A school,” Medrano said of Organ Mountain. “It was a good indication, a good sign for us that we’re getting to where we need to be.”

Medrano says pitching and hitting have been pretty good, but the defense has “struggled a little bit. We just need to be a little more consistent in everything that we’re trying to do.”

BHS plays in a Las Cruces tournament starting Friday against Centennial.

Heading into Thursday’s game at Cibola, Valencia is 1-2. The Jaguars, under first-year coach Eli Miera, started the season with a 12-2 victory over Manzano.

However, VHS lost by double-digits to Rio Rancho and Los Alamos. Miera said the tough schedule will prepare Valencia for district.

“These girls have shown they have grit and are a tight knit group,” Miera said. “I am really impressed with our talent level.

After opening the season with a 3-1 home victory over Aztec, Los Lunas lost 14-3 to Rio Rancho. The Tigers are now 2-1 after defeating Volcano Vista 18-8. On Tuesday, LLHS hosts Valencia, with the first pitch at 6 p.m.
