Two head coaching positions at Belen High School were filled by familiar names at a special meeting of the Belen School Board last Tuesday night when Steven Chavez was approved as the Eagles wrestling coach and Joe Wisneski was picked to lead the baseball program.

Chavez, 36, was Tom Torres’ long-time assistant at Los Lunas High School. Wisneski, 34, is the son of Al Wisneski, who brought the now-downtrodden Eagle baseball program to prominence in the late 1980s and early ’90s.

“We got two good ones,” Belen Athletic Director Danny Griego said. “I really believe now we’ve got people in place (as coaches) who have us headed in the right direction, and that goes for all of our sports programs.”

The wrestling and baseball programs were in need of direction after wrestling coach Jerry Moya resigned last month to become strength and conditioning coach at the high school and Mike Gutierrez stepped down as baseball coach last spring.
