Ida Sanchez Rios, age 76, a lifelong resident of Belen, passed away on April 11, 2023, after a brief illness.

Services will take place on Friday, April 28, at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church beginning with a visitation at 9 a.m., followed by a Rosary at 10 a.m., and a Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens. She graduated from Belen High School in 1964. After graduation, Ida began working as a bookkeeper at Becker Dalies Department Store.

She retired as bursar from the University of New Mexico-Valencia campus, where she was employed for more than 30 years. At UNM, Ida made many lifelong friends who would frequently get together for game nights. She always had a ready wit with a joke or a riddle for whomever would listen.

Ida was well known for her cooking, her specialties being salsa, arroz con pollo, red chile enchiladas, meatloaf, mashed potatoes and pineapple upside-down cake.

She is preceded in death by her only son, Victor Steven Saiz; and parents, Raphael and Concepcion Chavez Sanchez.

Ida is survived by her brothers, Norbert and Alex Sanchez; sisters-in-law, Linda and Milli Sanchez; sisters, Dolores Garcia, Sophie Baldonado and Lillian Ortega; and many nieces and nephews, who all loved her dearly and would always say, “Aunt Ida is so funny.” She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, especially by her sisters with whom Ida was very close.
