LOS LUNAS — Los Lunas High School AJROTC cadets devoted their day to the clean-up and beautification of the high school grounds as part of their on-going commitment to their program’s “community service learning project.”

The mission of JROTC programs throughout the nation is “To Motivate Young People to be Better Citizens.” The over-arching goal focuses on character and leadership through their many development and community-involved programs while fostering partnerships with communities and educational institutions.

The program also teaches the young cadets community involvement, responsibility, leadership skills and teamwork. Community service projects such as the one performed today reflect on the significance of this mission.

Throughout the day, each class period was divided into groups to pick up trash, weeds and debris around their school grounds.

The clean-up project showcased the cadets’ dedication to environmental stewardship and civic responsibility and, by the end of the day, more than 750 pounds of trash was picked up, which reflected the hard work the cadets put in.

Overall, the service-learning project provided an opportunity for the cadets to actively engage in the upkeep of the environment; it also promoted cleanliness and pride for their community and school.
