The Los Lunas softball team came three outs shy of a cinderella run to the state championship game last week, falling on a walk off two-run home run to the No. 3 seeded Carlsbad Cavegirls in the semifinals.
LLHS entered the eight team field as the No. 7 seed and faced a trip to Farmington to take on the No. 2 seeded Piedra Vista Panthers in the first round.
PV got out to an early lead, going up 3-1 heading into the top of the fifth and were seemingly only two innings away from eliminating LLHS. However, the Tigers came roaring back in the top of the fifth with three runs to take a 4-3 lead.
However, that lead would be short lived as PV tacked on two more in the bottom half of the fifth inning to go up 5-4 before making it 6-4 in the sixth.
In the seventh inning, the Tigers blew the game open, scoring five runs in the top of the frame.
Edyn Lopez was responsible for four of the five runs thanks to a grand slam with no one out to put LLHS up 8-6. Alexxa Torres would make it 9-6 two batters later with a solo shot.
The Panthers took advantage of a fielding error in the bottom half of the seventh to score their run, but were unable to take advantage of a bases loaded situation, giving LLHS the 9-7 win.
For their efforts, the Tigers earned a trip to Carlsbad, where the team led 3-0 in the seventh but saw the Cavegirls hit two, two-run home runs to win 4-3 on a walk off.
LLHS finished the season with a record of 18-4.
