Manuel “Ernie” Gabaldon

Manuel “Ernie” Gabaldon, a resident of Belen, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the age of 82, on April 19, 2024.

Ernie began his career with the Valley Ambulance Service, dedicating 10 years to serving his community. He then transitioned to the Valencia County Road Department, where he operated heavy equipment for 17 years. Later, Ernie devoted 27 years to the New Mexico Human Services Department as a truck driver before retiring. In his retirement years, he joined Belen Schools as a cherished substitute, working various roles from custodian to crossing guard.

Ernie enjoyed traveling to Laughlin with his family, working on cars with his grandsons, Manuel and Little Marvin, and spending time with his family.

However, above all, he found the greatest joy in sharing laughter and jokes with his beloved grandchildren.

He will always be remembered for his infectious laugh and the sparkle in his eyes. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Roman and Virginia Gabaldon; stepmother, Josephina Gabaldon; and sister, Faustina Edgin.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Carol Gabaldon; children, John and Veronica Baca, Gladys Gabaldon, Marvin Gabaldon (Tina Hans) and Andrea Gabaldon; grandchildren, Ernesto Baca, Manuel (Tanya) Baca, Anthony (Kristen) Baca, Christopher (Cristina) Rodriguez, Marvin Gabaldon, Mikey Gabaldon (Dez Sisneros), and Jane and Silas Soliz; Dominique Gallegos; 10 great-grandchildren, three brothers, one stepbrother, and three stepsisters, and family friend, Chris Rodriguez.

Services for Ernie will take place on Tuesday, April 30, at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. A visitation will take place at 9 a.m., followed by a Rosary at 9:30 a.m. A Funeral Mass will then be recited at 10 a.m. Ernie will then be laid to rest at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens immediately following the Mass.

Arrangements are being handled by the caring professionals at the Noblin Funeral Service Belen Chapel, where an online guest register is available at noblin.com
