The host school excelled during the Los Lunas High School Spirit Invitational last weekend, winning titles in three categories.

During the cheer program Friday, LLHS captured first in Game Day Coed.

“We had a clean, sharp routine,” said Los Lunas varsity coed cheer coach Marlene Barela, adding the routine was choreographed by LLHS graduate Alyssa Chavez. “The performance was exciting and creative, with lots of coed difficulty.”

Belen was among nine schools competing Friday and Saturday in the Los Lunas High School Spirit Invitational.

Belen was fourth in Game Day All Girl, the Eagles first competition of the year.

“Now we know what to cleanup and what the judges are looking for,” said BHS coach Pauline Vallejos.

The dance competition was held Saturday.

“It was a great morning of fabulous dancing,” said Tigerette head coach Jonelle Thompson-Armijo.

The Tigerettes took first in 5A Pom and 5A Hip Hop.

“Their hard work showed on the floor,” Armijo said.

In addition to LLHS and BHS, Artesia, Bernalillo, Taos, La Cueva, Aztec, Hope, Socorro, St. Michael’s, Sandia Prep and Farmington competed in at least one of the dozen categories. Non-sanctioned events included Jump Off, Tumble Off and Best Coed Stunt.

The teams are fine-tuning their routines for national competitions and the state meet scheduled for April 5-6 at the Pit in Albuquerque.
