Los Lunas High School graduate Ahren Griego, in white shirt, was named New Mexico girls wrestling coach of the year

Los Lunas High School graduate Ahren Griego has been named girls wrestling Coach of the Year by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association for his accomplishments at Volcano Vista High School.

The award was announced at the association’s recent banquet.

Griego guided the Hawks to an undefeated 2021-2022 regular season.

“Pretty cool” is how Griego described the coaching honor.

Griego graduated from Los Lunas High School in 2007. He finished as high as third place in the New Mexico High School state tournament while wrestling under “two legends” in Tom Torres and Steve Chavez.

This will be Griego’s 10th season coaching boys wrestling at Volcano Vista and fourth with the girls.

Because the sport is new for many girls, Griego says they bring a different passion to the sport than the boys.

“It is a new challenge, a new fight, a daily fight,” Griego said. “While the boys work hard, the girls have much more of a desire to win.”

Griego works in the autism program at Volcano Vista through Albuquerque Public Schools.
