Lugarda Calles, age 91, a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, and faithful follower of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, peacefully passed away on Feb. 7, 2024, at her home in Adelino, surrounded by her beloved family.  

Services will take place on Thursday, Feb. 15, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, beginning with a visitation at 10 a.m., followed by a Rosary at 11 a.m. and Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Tomé Catholic Cemetery.  

She was born in 1932 in Adelino. Lugarda was the daughter of Onofre and Maria Baca.  

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jose Calles; dear siblings, Antonio Baca, Frank Baca and Emma Sedillo; and son in-law, Harry Marquez. Together, in life and now reunited in eternity, a testament to the enduring power of family. 

As a faithful follower of Christ, Lugarda Calles exemplified the values of compassion, kindness and forgiveness in all aspects of her life. Her unwavering faith served as a guiding light, bringing comfort and strength to those around her. Her unconditional love knew no bounds. 

She dedicated her life to her family, embracing the role of matriarch with grace, love and unwavering faith. Her days were filled with simple pleasures and meaningful moments spent cooking, sewing and nurturing tender memories that will be cherished for generations to come. 

Lugarda shared an enduring bond with her beloved husband of 62 years, Jose Calles. Theirs was a love story marked with commitment, love, countless cherished moments, and in the challenges finding strength and dedication in each other. Their passings leaves a void in those who got to experience their presence, but they continue to shine brightly in the hearts of their family and all who were knew them.  

Their light will continue to shine in their children, Simona Marquez, Verlanda Baca and Leroy Calles, Hope and husband, Larry Baca, and Vivian and husband, Richard Garcia, who will all miss her dearly. 

In addition to her many loved ones, Lugarda is survived by her siblings, Ramon Baca and Elena Aragon. Pray they find comfort in her unity in eternity with her first love, Jesus Christ, her beloved husband, Jose Calles, and preceded children, Mary Jane and Jimmy Calles, and baby Calles.  

Lugarda leaves behind a cherished legacy in the form of 15 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild. She was a matriarch of a sprawling family tree, each branch enriched by her love, wisdom and nurturing presence. Her grandchildren filled her with joy from which she left them with a lasting impression that will forever resonate within their hearts and lives. 

Though she may be gone from our sight, Lugarda’s love, faith and legacy of kindness will forever remain in our hearts. May her gentle soul rest in eternal peace, and may her memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved her. 

Pallbearers will be Roy Marquez, Jeff Marquez, Narcy Baca, Kevin Baca, Roy Calles, Ivan Aragon, Trinidad Baca and Mariano Apodaca.
