Michael Dodson Barnes

1952-2020

Michael Dodson Barnes

We apologize for this belated announcement and, if you are just learning about this, I am sorry you had to find out this way.

More than 2 1/2 years ago, our brother, Michael D. Barnes, died from complications due to tuberous sclerosis complex at the age of 68. His sister, Beth, was able to be by his side. Our parents (now deceased) planned long ago for his interment at the Santa Fe National Cemetery beside them.

He is survived by his sister, Beth (68); sister, Katie (65); brother, Matt (63) and wife, Jodie; and five nieces.

Michael was born at a time when very little was known about the rare disease of TSC. The doctors predicted he would live no longer than 16 years. He could not vocalize but those who truly cared for him learned what he was trying to say. His expression was meditative and tolerant.

He was a gentle old soul. He smiled and laughed for the people he knew would appreciate it. He was a fixture in the Los Lunas community for many years.

There was so much more to him than was apparent on the surface. He was born before modern treatments were available and was just beginning to open up. Now his spirit is independent, laughing, singing and free to run at last. He will eat berry chantilly cake on his birthday and every day to his heart’s delight.

“And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” ― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince

The friends and community of the Barnes family are invited to attend the committal service of Michael Dodson Barnes to be held at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 8. A luncheon will follow at 12 p.m., location to be announced at the service. Please RSVP by Friday, Sept. 1, via email to [email protected]

Donations can be made to TSC Alliance in lieu of flowers.
