Kent F. Seery 

1946-2024 

Kent F. Seery, the second son of Marybel and George P. Seery, formerly of Belen, quietly passed away on Jan. 18, 2024, just nine days after his 78th birthday, in Tucson, Ariz., after a long illness. 

Between the years of 1923 and 1936, the Seery name became a prominent name in athletics in New Mexico as Kent’s father, George, and uncles, Alfred and Charles, starred in a variety of college sports at the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University. The Seery name would reappear between 1957 and 1971 when the children of Alfred, Charles and George, the Seery siblings who remained in Belen, progressed through high school, making it seem that every year opposing teams in baseball, basketball, track, football and golf faced another Seery! 

Between 1961-64, at 6-foot, 4-inch, Kent’s high school athletic talents in football, basketball and as a left-handed pitcher in baseball attracted more than a dozen colleges offering scholarships to play whichever of the three sports he wanted. He chose offensive end for football at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisc., still the only player from New Mexico to play there. 

Into the Vietnam War years, Kent enlisted in the Army Security Agency (ASA) in 1967. He was deployed in Thailand and Ethiopia. He was honorably discharged in 1971, and returned to the University of Wisconsin to finish his BA in political science in 1974. 

Kent then went to Tallahassee, Fla., working in the Florida Attorney General’s Office in their Crime Prevention Division.  

In 1971, Kent moved back to Belen to help take care of his mother. After she passed away in the summer of 1982, Kent moved to Albuquerque, and over the ensuing years took on a number of sales positions at several companies.  

In 2016, Kent was moved to Tucson, Ariz., for health reasons and to be near his brother, Doug. 

Kent was predeceased by his parents, his older brother, G. Patrick Seery, of Tallahassee, Fla., and a younger brother, Stephen Frank Seery, of Belen.  

He is survived by his younger brothers, Douglas B. Seery, of Tucson, Ariz., and Richard T. Seery, of Rancho Mission Viejo, Calif. 

A celebration of life for Kent will be held in Belen at a later date.
